Rehoboth Beach Patrol to host regional competition
July 1, 2025
The Rehoboth Beach Patrol (RBP) will once again host lifeguard-athletes from throughout the Mid-Atlantic region as they compete in sand and surf events for the chance to qualify for the United States Lifesaving Association’s national competition, to be held August 6-9 in Huntington State Beach, California.
The 2025 United States Lifesaving Association’s Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships will begin at 8 am Wednesday, July 9. The beach venue for this year’s competition returns to Baltimore Avenue, in front of RBP’s newly constructed headquarters.
“We’re excited to have the USLA Mid-Atlantics back on Rehoboth Beach,” says Rehoboth Beach Patrol Captain Jeff Giles, “We welcome everyone to come watch and support our guards.”
More than 300 lifeguards from New York to Virginia are expected to participate in events to qualify for the national competition, including a 90-meter sprint, 2K beach run, 4 x 90 soft-sand beach relay, 400-meter surf swim, swimmer rescue race, landline rescue race, paddleboard rescue race, run-swim-run, surf dash, and beach flags.
The July 9 USLA competition is not the only chance to see the Rehoboth Beach Patrol in action. The 48th annual Rehoboth Beach Patrol Lifeguard Olympics will take place beginning at 4 pm Thursday, July 24, bringing together regional lifeguards to compete in various races for bragging rights. On Monday, July 28, junior guards from across Sussex County and Ocean City, Maryland will compete, beginning at 4 pm, in running, swimming, and paddleboard races. Both competitions will take place on the beach at Baltimore Avenue.
Established in 1921, the Rehoboth Beach Patrol is considered one of the nation’s leading lifesaving agencies with more than 100 years of excellence in safety and lifesaving competition as well as a 700-member alumni association prepared to guide the RBP to continued excellence.
