Charter Revisions – A Clarification

There has been a lot of misinformation circulating on neighborhood websites and through text and email notifications regarding proposed changes to the Charter.  One example is the claim that taxes are going up — which is simply not true.  That particular change adjusts the tax cap from a fixed dollar amount to a percentage of property value, with no increase in taxes.  With future development coming to Rehoboth Beach, this update ensures that hotels and other new developments contribute their fair share for services such as our police department and other municipal operations as their assessed values grow. To be clear: there are no plans in this budget to raise taxes, but we do plan to bring back the fully drafted legislative language, the final bill, on the April 9th agenda.
