Continue discussions planned about developing new theater facility in Rehoboth Beach

With a vote of six to one, by the Mayor and Commissioners, the City of Rehoboth Beach today agreed to move forward with a development plan that will allow the city and Clear Space Theater Company (CSTC) to continue discussions about a possible new performing arts campus within the city limits. If approved, it will keep Clear Space in the heart of downtown Rehoboth Beach, making a major milestone in the City’s commitment to arts, culture and community vitality.

“I am delighted that we have taken this important step,” said Mayor Stan Mills, “We are ready to move forward.”

The vote affirms the City’s intent to enter into a Public Private Development Agreement with CSTC, paving the way for a new performing arts venue on Christian Street. CTSC would move to a city-owned location on Christian Street, currently the location of the Cape Henlopen Senior Center, which hopes to move to another location and is raising the funding to do so. They have a lease from the City that runs until 2030, so unless they decide to move sooner, any construction of a Clear Space theater could not begin for five years.

While the financial terms of the agreement remain under review, city leaders and CTSC have expressed a mutual desire to collaborate safeguards and milestones that ensure a sustainable and transparent partnership.

City Manager Taylour Tedder remarked, “Clear Space has meant so much to the City of Rehoboth, our visitors, residents and for the arts culture in our town. The theater can be the beginning of the revitalization of that specific area of the city. Of course, we must examine the appropriate zoning, the applicable building codes, and many other details, but today’s action clears the way for serious discussions of all those elements.”
